Summary

The Occupational Health and Wellness Manager is responsible for creating and supervising a best-in-class medical management and ergonomic programming for the Volkswagen Chattanooga Plant and supports additional VW locations. The primary purpose and function of this position is the planning, organizing, administration, and evaluation of a comprehensive occupational health and wellness management program which complies with all federal/state/local regulations. This role manages pre-employment evaluations, line side medical and restriction management, conditioning programs, and an on-site medical clinic which provides premier medical care to impacted employees.  The Occupational Health and Wellness Manager serves as the primary advisor to the VW Leadership team and reports directly to the Sr. Director, Total Rewards and Health.

Responsibilities

General

  • Manages all medical/health programs and ensures they are consistently administered in compliance with company policies and all applicable laws.
  • Develops and administers industry-recognized programs and related strategies (Wellness, Line-Side Medical Management, Restriction Management, Conditioning Programs, Work Simulation Training, Job Rotation, T/M Placement System, Early Intervention Program, Job Hazard Analysis, Incident Investigations, Job Placement Program etc.).
  • Engages contract services that supply health and wellness departmental services totaling over 3 million dollars per year and employees 25+ employees, ensuring optimal vendor performance.
  • Serves as the VW Chattanooga Medical Director for all state legal requirements regarding Department of Labor Medical Management authorization.
  • Acts as lead advisor for OSHA Recordkeeping, medical management of work-related injuries, and injury prevention programs, working closely with the Safety Department.

Occupational Health Management

  • Directs pre-employment screening, work conditioning, job placement, and restriction management programs with the assistance of a third-party provider. 
  • Conducts essential job function analyses for production processes and administers the program that determines best fit manufacturing job placement.
  • Supervises the internal team who performs ergonomic evaluations, establishes ergonomic design guidelines for all workstations set up, and directs the ergonomic burden counter measure process.
  • Trains management and employees 
  • Manages daily direction of VW Chattanooga Medical Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses and Medical Assistance, Injury Management/Rehabilitation Team including Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Exercise Physiologist.
  • Ensures effective coordination with worker's compensation and return to work processes.

Relationship and Reporting Management

  • Manages relationships between manufacturing, management and contracted staffing, communicating various issues, troubleshooting, and resolving problems. 
  • Conducts and reviews region-wide survey and audit systems for determining accuracy and effectiveness of sponsored programs.
  • Runs medical management meetings between medical team and department/facility leadership groups to investigate and properly identify work-related cause of injury.
  • Reports KPIs and establishes strategies for meeting company targets set by Volkswagen AG as well as Department of Labor requirements. 
  • Maintains and provides all Federal and/or State OSHA required documents (e.g. OSHA 300 logs, First Report of Injury, Injury Rates, Bureau of Labor requirements). 
  • Reports daily medical leaves and comprehensive strategy to manage absences to VW Chattanooga Board of Management.
  • Manages cost optimization planning, tracks results, and demonstrates ROI.

Wellness  Activities

  • Sponsors and conducts proactive programs through third party vendor that strategically support a healthy working environment by instilling a culture of healthy living, changing employees’ behaviors, educating the workforce, and providing worthwhile activities to employees.  (example:  Volunteer Exercise Classes, Annual Health Fair, etc.)  
  • Supervises the management of daily operations and performs general oversight of the on-site fitness center.

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of experience managing occupational health and wellness programs (manufacturing or large organization setting strongly preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year College or University in safety, engineering, science, or other relevant field of study
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA record keeping guidelines, Worker’s Compensation laws, ADA, and other relevant environmental, health, and safety standards.

Preferred

  • Position related experience in automotive manufacturing environment

Budget Accountability:   $3,398,800 annually (Service Providers)
Supervises Others:   Yes (contractors)
Travel Required:   Up to 30%
